Tim Baker is a multi-award winning theatre director and playwright based in Wales. Tim has directed for the National Theatre (London) and twice for the Theatr Genedlaethol (National Theatre of Wales). Tim works in both English and Welsh, and has directed productions as far afield as Japan, Oregon and Catalonia. Currently Tim is Associate Director of Clwyd Theatr Cymru, Wales’ largest producing theatre, and also Artistic Director of the National Youth Theatre of Wales. Amongst Tim’s awards are Best Director from the Liverpool Daily Post in 2001, and a major Welsh Arts Council Creative Wales Award of £25,000 in 2007, enabling him to travel worldwide exploring theatre in small nations. As part of the award Tim  traveled to Patagonia in April 2011 and met with the Welsh communies there, creating on his return two acclaimed productions based on that research; "The Spirit of the Mimosa"  and  "Yr Hirdaith"  (with the National Youth Theatre of Wales).

Febuary 2012 news - Tim meets with the Queen! Tim was invited to a reception at Buckingham Palace hosted by the Queen and the Royal Family to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens . The event was to recognise those in the field of arts and academia who have made a significant contribution to Dickensian heritage, and Tim - with several Dickens adaptations to his credit - was very honoured to be invited, and spent a few minutes in conversation with Her Majesty.

As a playwright, Tim has written and adapted extensively for the stage, including adaptations of John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath and Dickens’s Great Expectations (both published by Josef Weinberger).

Tim has also adapted Dickens's Hard Times and  A Christmas Carol (Humbug!), George Eliot’s Silas Marner, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog, A Child’s Christmas in Wales by Dylan Thomas and Morality Play by Barry Unsworth. All of Tim’s adaptations are available by contacting Tim directly here.

In July 2011 Tim  directed a major production for the National Eisteddfod based on James Mollinson's amazing collection of pictures of children from all over the world and where they sleep.

Tim worked with 150 young people from North Wales and the project  connected countries from all corners of the world.

This website is currently being overhauled – to come very soon will be Tim’s production archive and details of current projects.
